I just watched a TED2006 talk by Amy Smith. She works at MIT and is trying to help such countries as these. She has found that charcoal can be made from other waste products. One of her favorites is corn cobs! Another is sugarcane waste, though this method requires compaction into useable bricks. These ideas solve your dilemma of destroying forests to use healthier charcoal (healthier as long as carbon monoxide doesn’t become a problem). I hope these are the correct solutions and that they are implemented in a useful way for the communities.
